Frankfurt Motor Show 2009

Concept cars

BMW Vision Concept

Now, the BMW Vision concept car clearly demonstrates that the EfficientDynamics objectives are fully compatible when applied to a sports car. Conceived as a 2+2-seater with plug-in full-hybrid technology, this unique car combines the performance of a BMW M vehicle with a standard of fuel efficiency and emission management that exceeds even the current levels achieved by the latest small cars. This outstanding result is made possible by the combination of BMW ActiveHybrid components with an extremely economical combustion engine, and outstanding aerodynamic qualities.

BMW EfficientDynamics Concept is the most comprehensive implementation of the EfficientDynamics philosophy seen so far. The powertrain (a fuel-efficient 3-cylinder turbodiesel with one electric motor on each axle) provides a top speed limited electronically to 155 mph, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The cumulative maximum output of all three engines increases to 356 hp, with maximum torque generated by the three engines reaching 590 lb-ft.

Seat Ibiza IBZ Concept

Seat is showcasing the stunning Seat Ibiza IBZ Concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The star of the Seat stand in Germany previews a new, family-sized version that will make its appearance in showrooms across Europe towards the middle of next year, further increasing the company's B segment line-up in the process.

This is nothing short of the perfect definition of the Seat Ibiza IBZ Concept presented by Seat at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Its new dimensions and design create an ideal synergy between sporting intent, pragmatic functionality and spaciousness required to adapt to any need.

Audi e-tron Concept

Audi presents the highlight of the IAA 2009: the e-tron, a high-performance sports car with a purely electric drive system. Four motors – two each at the front and rear axles – drive the wheels, making the concept car a true quattro. Producing 230 kW (313 hp) and 4,500 Nm (3,319.03 lb-ft) of torque, the two-seater accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 4.8 seconds, and from 60 to 120 km/h (37.28 – 74.56 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The lithium-ion battery provides a truly useable energy content of 42.4 kilowatt hours to enable a range of approximately 248 kilometers.

The requirement specification for the concept vehicle goes far beyond battery technology and the replacement of the combustion engine with an electric drive system, however. The Audi development engineers decided back in the concept phase to design practically every component and technology based on the new requirements of electric mobility. The interaction of all elements has a decisive influence on the factors efficiency, range and practicality.

Volkswagen L1 Concept

The Volkswagen L1 Concept is unique in the world today. Thanks to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body, it weighs just 380 kilograms. The two-seater is powered by a new common rail turbo-diesel (two-cylinder TDI) and an electric motor. With its average fuel consumption of 1.49 litres diesel per 100 kilometres, this fully road-ready and extremely aerodynamic L1 (Cd 0.195!) is advancing to become the most fuel-efficient hybrid automobile in the world.

CO2 emissions of the 160 km/h fast concept car are just 39 g/km. If the Volkswagen L1 were to also go into production in 2013, it would debut an entirely new lightweight car concept and introduce a new era in automotive production.

Volkswagen E-Up Concept

The zero-emissions concept car designed under the leadership of Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand, and Head of the Development business area, is based on modules of the New Small Family anticipated in the year 2011, but at a length of 3.19 meters it is even more compact. It also offers an innovative 3+1 seating concept.

Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept

This year Mazda celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first MX-5 roadster, which laid the cornerstone for its Zoom-Zoom brand philosophy - reason enough for Mazda designers to create a fully-drivable show car, the MX-5 Superlight version. There are no plans to build this car, but it demonstrates how individual mobility can be maintained in a way that uses fewer natural resources.

The Mazda MX-5 Superlight version show car is fully-drivable, but there are no plans to produce it in the near future. Under the bonnet is the cultivated and frugal MZR 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine paired to the production roadster’s five-speed manual transmission. It develops 93 kW/126 PS of maximum power at 6,500 rpm. For an appealing engine sound, there’s a Mazdaspeed cold-air intake made of polished and powder-coated aluminium and a Mazdaspeed exhaust system, both of them specific to the MX-5 Superlight version. These systems deliver more intake air-flow, and less exhaust-gas back pressure.

Peugeot Ion Concept

Peugeot, the pioneer and 1st worldwide manufacturer of electric vehicles will be launching the Peugeot iOn at the end of 2010. Its performance and 130 km operating range is obtained in particular due to the use of lithium-ion batteries, which will provide an efficient response to the challenges of urban mobility and respect for the environment.

Peugeot BB1 Concept

With the Peugeot BB1 Concept car, Peugeot has fearlessly pushed back the conventions and boundaries of automobile manufacturing to bring a totally original response to the current and future needs of urban mobility. Capable of seating four people in a vehicle just 2.5 metres long, the Peugeot BB1 Concept car is a full electric vehicle that reinvents the automobile in every way: architecture, style, interior design, drive, connectivity - while all the time respecting the environment.

Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept

The Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept is proof of Toyota's intention to extend its full hybrid technology to European mainstream models. Toyota is committed to reducing the global impact of motor vehicles, by making the environmentally-friendly credentials of Hybrid Synergy Drive® (HSD) accessible to a wider customer base. The company is on-track to offering a hybrid version of every model in the early 2020s.

Renault Fluence ZE Concept

Renault Fluence ZE Concept is a statement of Renault's intention to produce a range of zeroemission vehicles that meet the needs of all types of customer. Renault Fluence ZE Concept is a genuine family car which demonstrates that attractive styling, comfort and space can go hand in hand with respect for the environment.

Renault Zoe Z.E. Concept

Renault Zoe Z.E. Concept is evidence that an all-electric zero-emission vehicle can also boast smart, appealing looks. Zoe Z.E. Concept features technology aimed at extending its range and enhancing the travelling comfort of all occupants.

Renault Twizy ZE Concept

Renault Twizy ZE Concept is an innovative response to the challenge of urban mobility. With its fourwheel chassis, Renault Twizy ZE Concept offers the driver and passenger - seated one behind the other - an all-electric means of transport which produces no CO2 emissions.

Renault Kangoo ZE Concept

The Renault Kangoo ZE Concept provides a foretaste of what mobility promises to resemble in the future for urban-based transporter and delivery companies, while at the same time carrying over the same acclaimed strengths as Renault Kangoo when it comes to travelling comfort, space and safety performance. To facilitate loading, the hatch-type rear door and wide, folding sill ensures that parcels and other types of loads are easy to slide into the boot.

BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS - more range piggyback-style

A further Mercedes milestone on the route to emissions-free mobility is the B-Class F-CELL with clean fuel cell drive and a range of around 400 kilometres. With this, Mercedes-Benz will put its first fuel cell passenger car built under series production conditions on the road before the end of the year. The environmentally friendly electric car boasts impressively refined driving performance on a par with that of a 2.0 litre petrol engine, while offering full everyday usability. The emissions-free driveline has an NEDC consumption that equates to 3.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (diesel equivalent). Low-volume series production of the B-Class F-CELL will commence at the end of 2009.

MINI Roadster Concept

The new concept car carries over the features typical of MINI to a new segment, the MINI designers thus bringing out yet another attractive facet in the character of the brand. So the world debut of the MINI Roadster Concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show will add a new perspective to the future of the MINI brand, presenting yet another great path of development.

The MINI Roadster Concept takes up features typical of the brand and re-interprets these unique strengths in a refreshingly new manner. Individual style, premium quality and a perfect match of driving pleasure and efficiency just right in this day and age determine the character of this compact two-seater. And through its design alone, the MINI Roadster Concept reflects the focus on maximum driving pleasure with nothing but the sky above.

Lexus LF-Ch Concept

Making its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show, the Lexus LF-Ch full hybrid concept is Lexus’s first approach to the competitive European premium compact segment.

It reflects the growing demand for cars that are smaller and more fuel and CO2 efficient, but with no compromise in levels of refinement and driving pleasure. By next year the compact segment is expected to claim the largest share of the European premium car market.

Hyundai ix-Metro Concept

The Hyundai ix-Metro Concept, the fifth in the Hyundai Namyang Design (HND) series of concept cars to be created by the Global Design Team in Korea, is an entry-level hybrid CUV which brings a new form to the traditional sub-B segment.

Citroen REVOLTe Concept

A vibrant and sophisticated re-chargeable hybrid, Citroën REVOLTe Concept represents a bold vision of the luxury, compact city car of tomorrow, combining confident styling with environmentally responsible technology to create a unique concept for the future of urban transportation.

Bugatti 16 C Galibier concept

Art - Forme - Technique are also the brand values to which the design and engineering team of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. oriented themselves in the development of the Galibier. With this new four-door concept car, Bugatti assumes anew a leading role in the use of new material combinations. Thus the body is constructed of handmade carbon fibre parts coloured dark blue so that, when illuminated, the woven structure shimmers through strikingly. Carbon fibre not only possesses unusually great rigidity but is also especially light. The wings and doors are out of polished aluminium.
